Art Students get Creative in

‘Art of the Run’ Competition

Art students at Wimberley High School and Danforth Jr. High were given a chance to turn their visions of exercise and running into art with the first annual ‘Art of the Run’ competition, sponsored by the Wimberley 4.  The art students at both schools were given the opportunity to get creative in how they interpreted running through the eyes of an artist.  “We thought it would be a great way for young artists to think about how they might interpret running as art”, said Mary Owens, graphic designer for the W4 events artistic elements.  Owens helped put together the competition and asked several acclaimed, local artists to judge the competition.  Wimberley artists Keith Sanders and Mary Ann Vieregg served as as judges for this first year’s Art of the Run competition.

Best of Show honors went to Jesse Shapiro, a junior at Wimberley High School.  Kyle Owens placed first out of the advanced art class and Faith Stephens’ submission placed first from the intermediate art class.  Brooke Cantu took first place honors out of the junior high art submissions.  The Best of Show and top three in each of the three judged divisions will be on display at Brookshire Brothers in Wimberley from April 22 through the weekend of the W4

The W4 and Art of the Run hope that this will become another tradition to find a history in the coming years in Wimberley.
